Ancient Flying Machine

When we see an airplane flying in the sky, it doesn’t give us a surprise. But if the same event occurred before 150 years, then it would have given us a big surprise and what if, I will say that aeronautic engineering was a part of ancient India and detailed scriptures were written to explain a building an airplane and flying an airplane then will you believe me?

It is believed that these Vimana were used in the ancient Vedic battles like Mahabharat and the battles of Ten Kings. Ashur king Ravana kidnapped lord Rama wife Sita through one of these kinds of Vimana.

Here we are going to explore an ancient Indian scripture called Vymaanika Shastra (Aeroplane scripture) that explains each and every aspect to built and flying of the airplane.

What is Vymaanika Shastra?

Vymaanika Shastra is an ancient Indian scripture which covers topic like “definition of an airplane, a pilot, aerial routes, food, clothing, metals, metal production, mirrors and their uses in wars, varieties of machinery and yantras, planes like ‘mantrik’, ‘tantrik’, and ‘kritak’” and four planes called Shakuna, Sundara, Rukma, and Tripura are described in greater detail.

Definition of Vimana

Vymaanika Shastra” consists of nearly 6000 lines, or 3000 verses of lucid Sanskrit, dealing with the construction of Vimanas or Aeroplanes. Definition from scholars which describes the Vimana are:

Lallachaarya says, “That which can fly in the sky with speed equal to that of birds, is called Vimaana.”

Aachaarya Naaraayana says, “That which can speed on earth, on water, through the air, by its own power, like a bird, is a “Vimana.”

Shankha says, “Experts in the science of aeronautics say, “That which can fly through the air from one place to another is a Vimaana”

And Vishwambhara says, “Experts say that that which can fly through the air from one country to another country, from one island to another island, and from one world to another world, is a “Vimana”.

How to protect the aircraft from the ground defense attack and how to protect the aircraft from the deep hit by planes in the sky as well as protection from the celestial substances, rain, wind, lightning, meteors, every aspect was considered while writing this scripture.

There is an amazing description of the installation of different instruments and various essential metaphorical dynamic dynamometers, chronometer, etc. and amazing description of various planes. Human beings can not remain without surprise after reading the description of the majority of aircraft types, names, construction and various measures of operation.

Author of Vymaanika Shastra

The work ‘Vymanika Shastra’ has been ascribed to the great sage of ancient India, Maharshi Bharadwaja. Maharshi Bharadwaja is known to be a towering scholar both in science, philosophy, and warfare. During his period, knowledge was transmitted from mouth to mouth and ear to ear.  He is one of the Saptaṛṣis (seven great sages or Maharṣis)

Training and Food for Pilot

“A few slokas deal with qualifications and training of pilots to man these aircraft. These ancient types of aircraft are provided with necessary cameras to take pictures of approaching enemy planes. Yet another set of slokas deals with the kind of food and clothing to be provided for pilots to keep them efficient and fit in air flying conditions.

Essential Food for Pilot

As stated in Kalpa Sootra, the food of the pilots is of three kinds, according to the seasons. “Ashana-Kalpa” or “Principles of Diet”, says–“During the spring and summer months, the pilot’s food should consist of buffalo-milk among liquids, among grains aadhaka or tuvar-dhal, and among flesh, the flesh of sheep. In the 4 months of rains and autumn, cow’s milk among liquids, wheat and black-gram among grains, and flesh of cocks and hens.

In the 4 months of winter and snow, goat’s-milk, yava and black-gram among grains, and flesh of sparrows.

For pilots belonging to the these castes of i.e. Braahmin, Kshatriya and Vyshya, the food will not include flesh.

Essential parts of Vimana

Just as the human body, if it is complete in all its limbs, is best able to accomplish things, the Vimana, if it is complete in all its parts, will be capable of functioning efficiently. There was these 31 essential part have been said in Vimana scripture.

Types of Vimana

Mantrika in Threthayuga

Vimanas were distinguished as per different yugas, like in Threthayuga flying machines were of the Mantrika category. Puspaka vimana was one of Maantrika Vimanas. They were available in 25 Varieties.

Tantrika in Dwaparayuga

In Dwaparayuga flying machines were of the Tantrika category. Taantrika Vimaanas are of Bhyrava and other 56 varieties.

Kritaka in Kaliyuga

In Kaliyuga, flying machines of the Kritaka category were specified. “Shakuna and the other 25 types of Vimanas are Kritakaah.

A Shakuna is an airplane that has 3 floors and compartments on each floor for different purposes.

On the ground floor along the supporting pillars, accommodation for passengers should be provided in the form of individual boxes. The partitioning boxes for passengers as well as the booths of the various machines should be divided off by railings.

On the second floor, booths should be constructed to accommodate the anga-yantras or the various mechanisms recommended for the safety of the vimana. On the third compartment, all the divine devices and complex equipment were installed carefully.

As its name suggests, it can perform operations in all three places i.e. land, air, and water. Due to this reason this aircraft is very famous. In order to accommodate crew and passengers and to store luggage in the tripura vimaana, rooms and partitions should be constructed with decorations. In order to provide privacy, doors should be provided with ventilators.

Sundar vimaana would be a kind of fighter plane and can gain speed in a fraction of time. It would be capable to gain a speed of 400 yojanas or 3600 miles within 1 second. Possibly it was made for participating in wars to give surprise attack to the enemy.

On the other hand, rukma vimana would be capable of 625 miles/hour. However it has passenger cabin on third floor but its wide shape suggest that it may be used for transmitting goods as well.

Experiment by Travis S. Taylor

An aerospace engineer Travis S. Taylor at UC-Irvine tests an aircraft model that was built using measurements from ancient Hindu texts. This test was to check if the created model can lift when provided simulated flying environment.

Results were very surprising as the model could pass that test and could show the lift in the air. A Video link is given in the description. Ancient astronaut theorists suggest the texts also contain information on how to build advanced spacecraft.

There was a trend in ancient Indian that all the information was passed verbally from one generation to another generation. There was no trend to make written records.

But when ancient sagas realized a threat to transferring information verbally then they decide to make a written record of every scripture. That written record has also traveled for hundreds of years.

So it is quite possible that some information becomes erroneous. But the experiments which have done by an aerospace engineer at UC-Irvine tests suggest that information given in this scripture is correct.

Second things are understanding of Sanskrit is not up to the mark to understand these kinds of scripture with full context. In that area as well as hundreds of errors would have been generated.

If a small model can be generated by reading Vimana scripture then certainly there are chances that real vimana can also be created.
